● The Interview

You've lived through this industry - the highs, the lows, the shifts. Looking back, what's the one experience that shaped your perspective on music more than anything else?

Wasn't the industry, music was a saving grace. It gave my life meaning, a raison de'tre (reason for being). Always been my comfort and joy. Approached a few times by agents, never followed up. Friends in the industry cried on my shoulder more than once...sigh.

What was the hardest thing you had to learn about the music industry?

Didn't fit into their mold. Liked and wrote so many styles, couldn't be categorized. Now they have a sections called 'alternative,' that's me!

With everything you've seen and been through, what do you know now that you wish someone had told you at the very beginning?

Told many things from friends and family, ignored them all. The 'business' is demanding, sometimes brutal to artists. Perseverance in music, or any art form, takes true desire. It's the love of doing the action. Not the result. 95% of the money is made by 5% of the artists, a sad but true fact. Thank goodness there is a pretty big pot!

In all your years, what's the worst advice you've seen given to artists? And what is the best advice you could give?

The Worst Advice

Changing to fit their idea of what it takes to be 'commercial.' (Unless that's your ultimate goal) Your vibe will attract your tribe.

The Best Advice

Be yourself, everyone else is taken. Oscar Wilde

What does your legacy mean to you? Not what you've built, but what you've given?

My legacy doesn't matter; what I do today, right now, does. Hope my performances and songs have given joy or solace to those in need of a respite from life's stresses and strife.

What made you decide to release music and build a fan base?

Met this mentor lady named Berlin. A whirlwind that swept me up in her musical cyclone! Plus, like they say, 'better late than never.' :)

What inspired you to release music alongside your closest friends instead of doing it alone, and what did that experience feel like when you finally did?

Berlin. (see above). 60 years of writing and performing, my first true solo song releases. All my other music was with bands or my 3 Uncle Brother's Greatest Hits (so far) CDs. Making friends with Joe, Vance and the rest of this crazy crew of musical misfits (sorry, I'm a big fan of alliteration) was more fun than puppies!!

What does success mean to you?

If you've helped one person, you've had a successful life. Been there, done that. Arts improve the lives of all who partake and those who enjoy them. Art is about making people feel, bringing the Spiritual aspect into the physical world. Grateful for all the experiences.

You are the official founders of the Release Club at REDLUX Academy. So many artists are going to be releasing their music knowing your name, knowing that you built this from the ground up. How does that feel, and what does it mean to you?

I Am humbled by the idea. Honored by the notion. True credit goes to the one who inspired me and paved the way for the release party, Joe, Vance and our Brilliant Big Boss Berlin. Guess it's true that if you stick around long enough, someone will notice. One <3, UB
